Shake it up!

Yesterday, my class went outside to do a friction experiment on the blacktop. First, we had to stick a thermometer into a bottle of sand and water to check the initial temperature of both. We tipped the bottle and put the thermometer in for 2-3 minutes. Next, we read our temperature and it was 58 degrees Fahrenheit. Then, we had to shake the bottle as hard as we could to produce friction. It was very fun! Last, we had to measure the temperature and we got 60 degrees Fahrenheit. It went up by 2 degrees. The sand particles rubbed together creating friction which caused the water to heat up. I think this is a good way to learn about friction.
